Smoking cigarettes is a contributing factor in many of the worst diseases known to man.  Today’s health topic is “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.”  What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?  COPD (as you often hear it referred to on radio and television commercials) is a lung disease.  the primary cause of COPD should come as no surprise to anyone.  It’s smoking cigarettes with all of their nasty poisons which start doing their damage from the very first puff and progresses rapidly with each successive smoke you have.  Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is deadly if not caught early enough and treated appropriately.  of course, quitting smoking today is a first course of treatment (and transitioning to electronic cigarettes is one available option to reach the point of total smoking cessation).

The effects of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease are significant and progressive the longer you continue to smoke cigarettes.  At first, your airway and air sacs within the lungs start to lose their shape, their stability, become loose and less efficient.  As a result, less quality air is entering and leaving the lungs.  the air sacs start to lose their elasticity.  the less elastic your air sacs are, the less oxygen they can carry to the blood.  As your condition worsens, the impact on your body can spread to other areas, including the effective operation of other major internal organs like the heart and the brain.

Continue to smoke cigarettes and the slippery slope gets steeper, and COPD begins to accelerate rapidly.  Before long, your failure to stop smoking cigarettes leads to permanent, irreversible damage to your lungs, other vital organs, and your circulatory system.

Once the disease has progressed long enough, the vital walls between all of your air sacs are destroyed.  the fewer the air sacs, the less necessary surface area for carrying life sustaining oxygen to the bloodstream is available.  your breathing becomes more labored and you have to do a lot more of it to carry the same oxygen to the blood as a healthy set of lungs.  the linings become thick and inflamed and can cause a fantastic deal of chest pain.   Additionally, the cells within your air system start producing more mucus.  this mucus clogs your air system and complicates your ability to breathe even more.

The end result is death if you fail to quit smoking cigarettes.  You’ve probably seen the telltale signs of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.  They’re the ones wheeling around an oxygen tank and wearing a mask to help increase their ability to oxygenate their blood.  Most of the time, that oxygen tank will be their partner for the small duration of their remaining lives.

Quitting smoking today, no matter your age, can provide you with immediate health benefits.  If other methods to stop smoking have failed you, perhaps it’s time you considered giving electronic cigarettes a try.
