What are the effects of smoking while breastfeeding?
i quit smoking when i found out i was pregnant. i started smoking a cigarette here and there when my baby was about a month ancient. know im smoking 2-5 cigarettes a day. i know its better to smoke and breastfeed then to use formula but i also know i should quit.
i cant find any info on the effects of smoking while breastfeeding. i've been looking at all the breastfeeding websites and they dont really say the effects. they just say if you smoke over 20 a day it can interfere with milk production and let down. what are the effects of smoking 2-5 cigarettes a day while breastfeeding?
i know its terrible for me to smoke and i feel really guilty. i shouldnt have started up again. those stupid cigarettes are so addicting. im really trying to quit so please dont be mean
A recent report claims that women exposed to secondhand smoke may have up to a 90 percent greater risk of developing breast cancer. The children of parents who smoke are more likely to suffer from pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, asthma and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). it is even felt that mothers who smoke and breastfeed may pass harmful chemicals from nicotine to their baby through their breast milk.

dont smoke at all around your baby, when you smoke your baby is getting all the toxins and every 4 cigs are one full cig she smokes…try to quit as soon as possible
Take notice of all the adds that tell you what diseases you can get from smoking, smoking around a baby can seriously effect the airways and cause damage, how do you want your child to grow up?
I smoke cigarettes and I breastfed. I smoke about 4-8 a day. My daughter is 2 months ancient and growing fine. I'm sure there are some effects to our babies when we smoke, but actually only a small of it ends up in our breast milk. We are giving our babies the best food. I am currently trying to quit, just cutting back gradually. Set a goal date and I'm sure you'll be able to stick with it ( make it realistic! ). if you're only smoking a few a day, why do you need them anyways? I know they are addicting, but reckon of how many more years you will add to your life by quiting!
smoking while being around a baby is terrible. the chemicals stay on your clothes and if you come in contact with your baby you pass the chemicals on to him
i was a smoker myself and still am the amount you smoke wont harm your milk
Have you ever seen the ad. where the baby is smoking while in the mothers womb? Its pretty sad now reckon about your baby puffing on a cancer stick while they are sucking a bottle or breast. just quit for your child and for yourself
I really stopped smoking the day I found out I was pregnant with both of my daughters. After they were born I only nursed both of them for a few weeks due to low milk production, but once I was supplimenting with formula I found myself outside slipping a few cigarettes a day. it was my 5-minute break for myself while she napped, etc.
It's never good to smoke and I am learning to find other alternatives to my down-time.
Reckon about your health and the health of your baby.
Please bear with anyone who is unkind in their response, that's just the way it goes sometimes. but I looked into this as well, for the same reason, and what I found (I wish I could remember where) is that
– if and when you must smoke, do it AFTER you breastfeed (Maybe a doc or rn could clarify why… is it similar to metabolizing alcohol?)
– The amount of harm coming to the baby is not from the breastfeeding, but the secondhand smoke that may be on you… remember to always wash up, brush teeth, etc. and for goodness sake, smoke outside, away from baby. (I'm quite sure you are doing this but it had to be said!)
– if there are traces of nicotine that get into breastmilk, it will most likely manifest in an agitated, wakeful baby (those would be the effects)
Smoking is disgusting and horrible around a baby. you are blowing your second hand smoke all over this child. also, there is an effect. Nicotine is in your milk that you are feeding this child. do you reckon that somehow the Nicotine does not get to them….well it does. Use your common sense and stop being so damn selfish. you can hold off on the smokes until your child is on formula or regular food. Be a parent first! I am not trying to be mean, but seriously, you already know the answer to this.
Smoking while breast feeding can be very harmful i am a pediatrition and I would like to tell you all the nicotine from the cigarette well get into your breastmilk and the baby could get ADD or ADHD so don't smoke period it is terrible for your lungs
