Picture this : a young college student, heavy headed and oh-so-conscious of both his ‘image’ and his persona, in an attempt to look ‘cool’, takes the nearest cigarette he can lay his hands on, and promptly lights up. two puffs of smoke later, in his mind; he is the hero of the latest film he saw, the latest novel he read. The world looks at him and his ‘style’ with awe and appreciative glances. Pity he doesn’t realize the joke is on him. This is exactly how most of the people the world over get their initiation into smoking. The reasons for starting to smoke may not be too many – the main being trying to look cool and hip or whatever, but definitely the reasons to quit smoking are unending. Count them off the back of your hand and you may be short of numbers, there are so many. I mean, burning out the organs which keep you alive (read lungs) by smoking cigarettes day in and day out, should be incentive enough to quit the habit, to kick the butt. unfortunately one single stick of nicotine can have more control over many people the world over than maybe a thousand laws of the land could. what with smoking being banned in public places in India as well as in many other countries of the world, the nicotine addicts will still have none of it. Still, let us try and figure out some reasons to quit smoking.–>Health concerns:You have only one life to lead, and, unless you are okay with the idea of going in for lung replacement surgery, only a pair of lungs to do with. and they were not designed to withstand gallons of smoke containing harmful chemicals like tobacco dust, ammonia additives, and the like.We are living in an already over taxed world in terms of pollution, heat, dust and grime. there is a definite reason not to put even more pressure on the lungs. and if you think big medical terms go a little bit further in deterring you from smoking, then here goes:- smoking causes cancer, stenosis, and even chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This should be reason enough to quit, but wait, there is more.Your own health is important, no doubt, but what about the non-smoker who is sitting next to you when you are puffing away to glory, blissfully unaware of the harm you are causing him? Passive smoking, as it is called, is even more harmful than active smoking.–>Economic considerations:Alright, you may have lots of money. but how can anyone justify burning up thousands of rupees a year (if we consider individual usage) in smoke? there are so many other more productive uses you can put the money to, do the math. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out, that spending that much money into burning holes in your lungs just doesn’t add up.–>Social reason:Anyone would look much more attractive without a stick of nictoine between their lips. This hasnt, or probably has, hit most of the smokers, who got into it to look cool, but later realised that all they got into is hot soup.unfortunately, you dont leave smoking, smoking leaves you – battered, bruised and broken from outside and inside. A person who lights up nonchalantly, even in a group some of whom may have definite health issues with it, does NOT appear cool to anybody, he appears foolish. and ignorant – of his own as well as others’s well being. Society is already beginning to shun smokers through laws, which prevent public smoking. Man is a social animal; it is best not to go against the very grain of social well being. It is best not to hamper others’s and our own health by smoking. The bottomline – enough smoke comes out of the millions of vehicles on the road, the millions of chimneys in the factories and the millions of other pollution causing elements. there is no reason to add a billion mouths to the list of hazardous sources of smoke. Ultimately, its for our own good. Health, economy and societal reason wise.It might be difficult to give up smoking in the first go. I got a alternative solution by using the smartsmoker e-cigarette which retains me the same pleasure but without the harm. It’s a boon for people like me. I think you will find this product helpful to finally get rid of smoking.
